BAMFORD
CARNIVAL
Bamford, in the heart of the Hope Valley, organises a week of activities culminating in Carnival Day, usually
the third Saturday in July. There are several sporting events: Junior 5-a-side football, a very well-attended
Junior Fell Race and an extremely popular Senior Fell Race. There are events for the adults, including
a fascinating exhibition put on by the History Society, Bingo a Whist Drive and a Treasure Hunt. There
are family fun events put on by the Village pubs as well as the traditional events: Crowning of the Queen, Well Dressing and
the Carnival.Carnival Day starts with a procession
through the village of Carnival Queens, fancy dress contestants and floats, with everyone ending up at the Recreation Ground where there are games, entertainment and side shows for all the family. Although some events
are for local residents only, including the Junior 5-a-side Football and the Junior Fell Race, most are open to visitors. The Fell Race and Carnival Day in particular attract people from far a field. Money raised from the Carnival
goes to local organisations and charities, for example the Primary School and Play Groups, St. John’s Ambulance and
Mountain Rescue, Cubs, Brownies, Guides, Community Arts and the Senior Citizens Fund, as well as the local Churches, Royal
British Legion, etc.
BAMFORD CARNIVAL 2010
Bamford Carnival Committee
would like to thank everyone who helped during carnival week and also on Carnival day, from the gang who put the buntings
up, to the crazy gang who stayed on the Recreation Ground until 11pm Friday night and got up again at 5am Saturday morning
to put up marquees etc, the community groups who helped to run events and made scarecrows even though the one for Bamford
primary school was stolen before we could judge it! Thank-you also to the parents who ran the games in the Teen Challenge,
the marshalls for doing the fell races and carnival parade and also Jamie for organising the cricket event, Nigel and Karen
for football, Lisa and Rob for Brain of Bamford, and Demelza for the Pet Art competition, Tim Gould for the Senior Fell race
and Jill for the Junior Fell Race. Also thank-you to the Hope Valley Police for attending the crowning and the parade,
my apologies to anyone I may have forgotten to mention. Without the help of these people Carnival week would not be
able to happen. We would also like to say welcome and well done to anyone who was new to our carnival and helped out.
Despite the weather Carnival day seems to have been a success with a lot of people coming down to the Recreation Ground
on Saturday and we have had many comments from people saying how much they enjoyed the afternoon particularly the entertainment.
So thank-you to the people of Bamford and visitors who came along and supported the Carnival. Thank-you to the local businesses who donated prizes and sponsored
Bamford Carnival. Last
but not least a special thank-you must go to our retiring royalty for representing Bamford around the Peak District and good
luck to our new royalty for the coming year. The theme for this year's carnival was Mardi Gras. This year's Royalty are: Queen
