Bamford Women's Institute

Affiliated to the National Federation, Derbyshire County Federation and Country Women of the World

The first meeting of Bamford WI was held in February 1931 with 41 members present. Meetings were held in the afternoon until February 1963, when a change was made to meet in the evening. The January meeting that year had to be cancelled due to snow! For a short time meetings were held twice a month, an afternoon and an evening meeting. In the early 1950s members living in the upper Derwent Valley and Woodlands Valley were brought to the meetings by bus, provided by Mr Judkins and subsidized by the Derbyshire Federation of Women’s Institutes. A new WI was established called Derwent and Woodlands in February 1960 but has since closed down.

Meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month (except August) at 7.30 pm in the Moore Memorial Hall, Brentwood Road, Bamford, and our present membership stands at 37 members. Details of the Monthly Meeting and Speakers are on the Village notice board.

We also enjoy many social events and activities, such as outings, walks, craft, cookery and involvement in village activities throughout the year.
